Wireless gateways for low-power data transmission are readily available on the market, but their applications are limited due to vulnerability to harsh environmental conditions both indoor and outdoor, such as rain and dust. Furthermore, their installation is dictated by power grid availability meaning that many remote outdoor locations are unable to benefit from using low power protocols such as LoRa and Sigfox.
Reece Innovation was challenged with designing and developing a rugged structure which can hold and operate low-power communication (LPWAN) gateways, able to withstand harsh environmental conditions.
Our team of Mechanical Engineers developed a robust structure, made from high grade galvanized steel, designed to hold and operate LPWAN gateways, such as LoRa and Sigfox. The Gateway is powered by high efficiency solar panels, therefore it can be installed in remote locations where mains power is unavailable. The gateway is tolerant of low temperatures and has ample battery storage for long term operation in low-light conditions. The structure holds the gateway at an optimal height for wide radio coverage. Much of the initial design went in to developing the structure to withstand strong wind speeds and other harsh environmental conditions.
Collecting data from outdoor sensors is becoming more important in a wide range of sectors. From Agriculture to Utilities and Construction, these industries are moving to find smarter ways of working. IoT networks can be used for a wide range of purposes, such as cattle tracking, measuring soil moisture, water quality or improving staff safety. Our bespoke, solar-powered pod allows these gateways to be installed and operated in even the most difficult to access locations. Some of our units are currently being used to track sheep herds and environmental conditions in the Scottish Highlands, whilst another has been placed on the highest British mountain – Ben Nevis.
